Frequently Asked Questions

  • The word “giclée” is derived from the French word, gicleur, which means, “sprinkler” or “to spray.”

Giclée generally refers to the digital print process of using pigment-based inks from an inkjet printer to reproduce fine art. Pigment inks, which are more water and fade resistant than dye inks found in ordinary printers, are “sprayed” onto the paper, resulting in longer lasting, higher quality art prints.

Giclée prints can be deemed museum quality and last for hundreds of years under the right conditions.

All of our greeting cards and prints are considered giclée.

  • The term “archival” relates to the life expectancy or longevity of an object.

For Lollie & Bee, an archival-quality art print or card has to do with the inks and paper used. We use pigment inks that are rated to last hundreds of years, and 100% cotton rag paper that is acid-free, lignin-free and has no optical brightening agents.

  • Acid-free means that the paper being used is free of any natural acids that would speed up the disintegration of paper materials and reduce the life of the print.

All of our greeting cards and giclée prints are acid-free.

  • Lignin-free means that the paper being used is free of any naturally occurring lignin that is found in plants, which would degrade the paper over time.

All of our greeting cards and giclée prints are lignin-free.

  • GSM (grams per square meter) is a measurement used for determining thickness of materials, in our case, paper. The higher the GSM, the thicker and heavier the paper. Standard office paper is usually around 90 gsm. We use 310 gsm paper for our greeting cards and 315 gsm paper for our giclée prints, both of which are 100% cotton rag for premium quality and feel.
